If you did not read your December newsletter (shame on you! ;), here are some reminders regarding our December meeting / host family event, as well as maps of the facility.

1. Our self-guided tour begins at 5 pm, therefore being on-time is extremely important. Please try to arrive NO LATER than 4:30 pm. I will be there waiting at that time to help organize. Our tickets are timed, so we cannot wait for you!!!

2. We will need to pay for admission at arrival. They have asked that we have ONE payment for our entire group. Please bring cash for the amount you owe, so that I can collect it from you when you arrive and make this process as smooth as possible. I am also responsible for distributing tickets to everyone prior to our tour, so again, please be on time!

3. We are meeting at the “Group Visits” office inside the Visitor’s Center. DO NOT go through the main, general entrance. The Group Visits office provides a separate reception and ticketing area.

4. Allow yourself enough driving time to account for any traffic. Also, the parking area is large and you may have a bit of a walk from your parking space to the Visitor’s Center. Please get directions ahead of time!!

Prices:

ADULTS: $12

STUDENTS (Ages 5 – 22): $3

CHILDREN 4 & UNDER: FREE!

If you need driving directions, go to a website like maps.google.com or www.mapquest.com.  Enter your home address as the start address and 1001 Longwood Road, Kennett Square, PA 19348 as your end address.

PLEASE DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR COLD WEATHER.  Some of the displays are outdoors, so it’s important to dress warmly.  Also, wear shoes that are comfortable for walking, both indoors and outdoors!!!

My office hours are Monday through Friday from 10 am to 7 pm.  This is the time when I am available to answer questions or address concerns or escalated situations by phone.  I do check email outside of these hours, so that is the best way to reach me outside of these hours.  I also do check voice mail on the weekends, but I may not return your call until the next business day if your call is not urgent in nature.  If you do have an emergency and cannot reach me, call 1-800-333-6056 and press option 9.  We do have staff on-call 24 / 7 to deal with emergency situations outside of regular business hours.

Our November meeting focused on teaching the au pairs to prevent household poisonings. Is your home safe?

  • Ensure that all medications and household products are locked out of sight and out of reach of kids, even if they are labeled as child-resistant. Child-resistant does not mean child-proof. Items to watch for include cleaners, cosmetics and medicines.
  • Always read labels, follow directions and give medicines to kids based on their weights and ages. Only use the dispenser that comes packaged with medications.
  • Make sure you know where your family’s ipecac syrup is kept in the case of a poisoning exposure. The ipecac syrup should be used only on the advice of a poison control center or a physician. If the local poison control center has recommended that activated charcoal be kept on hand as well, make sure you know where to find it in case of an emergency.
  • Buy products in child-resistant packaging when available. Always store products in original packaging to avoid confusion.
  • Discard old medicine regularly by flushing it down the toilet.
  • Never create new cleaning solutions by mixing different products designed for other uses. New mixtures could be harmful to kids, and might not be stored in properly labeled or child-resistant containers.
  • Avoid taking medicine in front of kids, as they tend to mimic adult actions.
  • Never refer to medicine as candy.
  • For homes with a residential swimming pool, make sure pool supplies and chemicals are locked out of reach.
  • Make sure potentially poisonous plants are kept out of reach. For more information or for poisoning help, call 1-800-222-1222.
