The Great State of Delaware!

Why choose Delaware for your au pair year?

Delaware may be a state that you are not familiar with, but you should be! Delaware has a lot to offer and this is why it has the nickname of “Small Wonder.” There is lots to see and do, and it is located on the Atlantic Ocean and is central to many of the largest cities on the east coast—these are easily accessible by bus or by train. You can see links to items mentioned below in the list on the right side of this page!

· Philadelphia is less than an hour from northern Delaware. You don’t need to worry about driving there either—you can take SEPTA from Wilmington for about $10 round trip. (The train does not run to Wilmington on Sundays, though.)

· You can also get to Baltimore, New York City or Washington DC easily. If you can’t drive, you can take Amtrak (prices can vary), Greyhound buses (which even go as far as Toronto and Montreal!) or the AA bus, which can be taken from Dover, Smyrna or Wilmington to places like NYC and Baltimore for $35 or less round trip! The AA bus also goes to Virginia Beach and Albany, NY (by transfer).

· You can even reach farther destinations like Boston by taking the Bolt bus from 30th Street Station (about $30), and transferring in NYC or taking Amtrak. This trip will take about a day, so plan accordingly!

· We are also closer than much of the country to au pair weekend courses held by Sojourner Douglass College in Linthicum, MD; CW Post at Long Island University and the Au Pair Weekends at Silver Bay.

Delaware itself has a lot of great things, too!

· We have the beach towns of Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island—all of which are on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

· We have the scenic Brandywine Valley, with mansions, gardens and museums. These include former estates of the DuPont family, such as Winterthur, Nemours and Hagley; Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine River Museum.

· Wilmington, our largest city, has cultural things such as the Delaware Ballet, Delaware Symphony, DuPont Theatre, Grand Opera House, Delaware Theatre Company and the Delaware Art Museum. There is also Frawley Stadium, home of the Wilmington Blue Rocks baseball team, and the Wilmington Riverfront on the Christina River.

· The city of Newark is home to the University of Delaware, the alma mater of Vice President Joe Biden (and your local LCC! :)

  • It is well known for its engineering and science departments, but has prestigious faculty in all departments.
  • UD also has a community English as a Second Language course offered through the English Language Institute, which an au pair can complete for all 6 credits.
  • The University has many sports teams, if you wish to catch a game of football or basketball. There is an ice rink that is open for public skating and even lessons!
  • There is an International Film Series offered Sunday nights at 7:30 for free and is open to the public.
  • The Professional Theatre Training Program (PTTP) offers a series of dramatic plays throughout the school year.
  • The Department of Music has many ensembles from jazz to chamber music, which perform on a regular basis.
  • The Cosmopolitan Club is a group of international students on campus; the club meets and holds events throughout the school year.

· There are also many restaurants, coffee shops and small unique stores along Main Street in Newark. The town is full of college students for most of the year, and a good place for people in this age group.
